Mom, Wife and Community Volunteer

My name is Sonja Buckmeier, I am a long-time public servant and advocate, focused on District 30A’s families, public school students, older Minnesotans, and community.

Hello, neighbors of District 30A!

I am Sonja Buckmeier, and for over a quarter of a century, I’ve been deeply embedded in the fabric of our community.

Sonja grew up in the small town of Eagle Lake just outside of Mankato. Raised in a middle-class working family, she experienced and learned life’s ups and downs.

Compassion, perseverance, and hard work were instilled by her parents. She earned a Business Administration degree from Mankato State University, paying for her education by a combination of job wages, scholarships, and loans.

As a first-generation graduate, Sonja values public education and the impact equitable education access has for all students.

Today, she lives in St. Michael with her husband. Together they raised 4 children. Since moving to St. Michael over 25 years ago, she has demonstrated her commitment to the growth of local schools, connecting with residents of all ages and backgrounds.

Sonja is a well-known member of the community with many years of service in bond and levy committees within the school district, substitute teaching, PTO boards, election judging, and involvement with scouting troops.

Now, Sonja wants to use her experiences to help improve the lives of all Minnesotans. She believes in the strength of our communities and is excited about the opportunity to represent them at the state capitol.

Sonja is committed to building safe, supportive, healthy, and inclusive communities where all residents are respected and have access to resources needed to support their families.

Most importantly, this includes firm support to safeguard a women’s right to make decisions about her own body, reproductive freedom, and fiercely working to get the ERA on the ballot.
